Every January, Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month serves as a powerful reminder of a reality too many in the fire service know all too well: firefighters face an increased risk of cancer simply by doing their job.

At The Fire Depot, this month is deeply personal. As a firefighter-owned business, cancer awareness isn’t just a campaign—it’s part of our everyday mission to support the men and women who put their lives on the line, and the families who stand behind them.

The Growing Cancer Risk in the Fire Service

Firefighters are routinely exposed to toxic substances—during fires, overhaul, training, and even while wearing contaminated gear. These exposures don’t always end when the call does.

According to research and advocacy from organizations like International Association of Fire Fighters, firefighters have higher rates of certain cancers compared to the general population, including:

  • Multiple myeloma

  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

  • Brain cancer

  • Testicular cancer

  • Prostate cancer

These risks don’t discriminate by rank, department size, or years of service. Career, volunteer, paid-on-call—cancer impacts the entire fire service community.

Awareness Is the First Line of Defense

Cancer awareness saves lives.

Knowing the risks empowers firefighters to:

  • Take gear decontamination seriously

  • Use clean cab and station practices

  • Wear PPE properly and consistently

  • Advocate for regular screenings and early detection

Small changes—washing gear after every fire, showering promptly, keeping contaminated gear out of living spaces—can make a meaningful difference over time.

The Families Behind the Firefighters

Cancer doesn’t just affect the firefighter—it affects spouses, children, coworkers, and entire departments.

As a fire family ourselves, we know the worry that comes with every exposure, every diagnosis, and every difficult conversation. Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month is also about honoring the strength of families who support their firefighters through prevention, treatment, and recovery.

How You Can Get Involved This Month

You don’t have to be a firefighter to make an impact. There are some great organizations out there supporting this cause. We are highlighting Walkforthered.org Home | Neighbors United
